Dr Jodie Barker
Chartered Clinical Psychologist
Hi, I am passionate and committed to providing a warm, empathic and supportive space to help individuals overcome the difficulties they are experiencing. I believe that everyone is the expert of their own experience but bring my knowledge and training as a psychologist to work collaboratively with you to develop helpful skills that can help you to cope and reconnect with the things that you enjoy.
I have over 10 years of experience working in mental health and have worked with a range of individuals from different cultural backgrounds and of different ages from birth to the end of life. I have worked in both the NHS and private sector and am currently a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist within a clinical health setting (chronic pain and diabetes). Often we are not aware of the powerful link between mind and body. Learning how to nurture and care for both of these can have a profound effect on a person’s quality of life. I also have lived experience of receiving a cancer diagnosis and this has provided me with even more compassion and empathy for those living with illness and dealing with loss.
I continue to work across the lifespan with children, young people and adults. In addition to helping people deal with chronic health conditions and the secondary suffering that may come with these, I also work with children and young people on a range of difficulties. These include: low mood, anxiety, OCD and self-harm. I also have recent experience of working within a sexual health setting and have supported people in dealing with sexual difficulties, intimacy, STI diagnoses and gynaecological pain.
Ways of Working
I use an integrative approach in my work which means that the model of therapy that I use is responsive to a person’s needs. In my work I predominantly use Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness Based Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) a and Compassion Focused Therapy. We start our work together developing an understanding of the difficulties you are experiencing and what you would like to get out of therapy. We then regularly review how helpful you are finding it so that you are getting the most out of our time together.
