Dr Iona Naismith

Clinical Psychologist

I am a Doctor of Clinical Psychology with 10 years of experience delivering evidence-based therapies for adults and adolescents. I work with a range of difficulties including depression, anxiety disorders, relationship or interpersonal difficulties, emotion-regulation difficulties, low self-esteem, stress, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), eating disorders and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I specialise in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), mindfulness, acceptance, interpersonal therapies, and other evidence-based therapies.

I am also an experienced couple therapist, helping couples to feel closer, reduce conflict, and build or rediscover connection and intimacy. These factors can transform many people’s wellbeing, yet we often feel completely at sea when trying to navigate them. I use different therapies like Emotionally-Focused Couple Therapy (EFT) and Integrative Couples Therapy (ICT) which are proven to have a long-lasting impact on relationship happiness. In the first few sessions we’ll work on understanding each partner's needs, patterns that are contributing to conflict and feeling “stuck”, and (if you like) explore how past experiences might have shaped your feelings and behaviours in the current relationship. We’ll then practice some straightforward, practical ways to build lasting understanding, love and closeness.

I am passionate about promoting therapy as a valuable part of self-care and viewing mental health difficulties as normal reactions to difficult life events. Through experience, I have seen that the techniques learnt in therapy can bring life-altering benefits. In therapy sessions, we’ll work together to understand current problems and find useful tools you can use long-term to solve them.

Dr Iona Naismith, Experienced Clinic Psychologist

My key principles are that:
- Therapy should be guided by the best evidence about what helps
- Therapy only works when clients feel truly listened to, valued and respected
- The therapist and client should work together as a team, making changes that fit the client's goals and values.

I completed an undergraduate degree in psychology at the University of Oxford and a doctorate in clinical psychology at University College London. I have worked in various private and public clinics and an award-winning therapy service in North London. I am now a Professor of Psychology at University of the Andes in Colombia, teaching and supervising the Masters in clinical psychology and researching new therapy developments
